Is the Mac's system volume encrypted with FileVault? I've just been putting in my login info with the screen still asleep; once I'm logged in I move the mouse to a "hot corner" assigned to put the monitor to sleep, then move it away. Two repetitions of this and the mac wakes the screen. Same issue here. The problem usually occurs when for longer sleep periods, for example, after two days or so.
It is less frequent when I try wake the Mac up after like 12 hours. I believe it is a combination of both port and the Mac issues as usually upon clicking the mouse to wake up the computer I receive notifications for new emails, available updates, etc, on the black screen but then the curser keeps running the rainbow on the black screen and never ends. Upon restart it usually takes me to Machintash HD password update, but I can choose exit and then the restart functions properly. In fact I noticed that the store rep was having trouble getting the demo model to wake as well.
I think he just reset it. I use Luna display as a main display for about a week but I also have an Asus monitor and the issue is always the same.

This seems like a fairly rampant issue. The apple forums have lots of people there talking about this issue also. Why has Apple not fixed this by now.
I see complaints going back to November. I feel like Steve Jobs would roll over in his grave if he saw how quality was going with their products. Same problem. This is the default sleep mode for desktop Macs. This mode is also called hibernatemode 0.

Hibernation: In this mode, the contents of RAM are copied to your startup drive before the Mac enters sleep. Once the Mac is sleeping, power is removed from the RAM. When you wake the Mac up, the startup drive must first write the data back to the RAM, so wake time is a bit slower.
